CEO Retires from Agency

Effective October 18, 2010, Richard L. King, Chief Executive Officer, at Annie Malone Children and Family Service Center, retired to pursue other lifelong interests after five years of service at the age of 65. "It is a bittersweet decision for me to make, but I believe it will benefit both the Agency and me with new opportunities, said King."

"I have thoroughly enjoyed working with staff, clients, donors and partners over the past five years and look for- ward to seeing Annie Malone soar with success under new leadership." Annie Malone has made some notorious moves during King's appointment as CEO.

The Board Chairman, Delsie Boyd stated, "We remain confident in the interim, that the new leader will make the necessary strides to lead the agency into a season bearing change of new hope for the abused, homeless and at-risk children and families we serve." Currently, Annie Malone is seeking to re-plant seeds to benefit from a full harvest of friendly neighbors and loyal supporters.

Annie Malone Earns Re-Accreditation

A proud moment came when, Annie Malone Children and Family Service Center received the official letter from the Council of Accreditation (COA) dated on December 3, 2010 stating that Annie Malone had earned its re-accreditation.

COA's commitment to maintaining the highest level of standards and quality improvements is designed to identify providers that have set high performance standards for themselves and have made commitment to their constituents to deliver the highest quality services. COA proudly recognized Annie Malone as one of the outstanding providers.

Message During The Interim...

Greetings Friends!

Recently, I was appointed by the Board of Directors, to assume the role of Interim Chief Executive Officer. I am excited for the opportunity ahead of me in the coming months as we seek to continue our mission to improve the quality of life for children and families. I have over 30 years of social services experience and most of my career has been with Annie Malone Children and Family Service Center.

I welcome you to learn more about our programs, services, historical elements and overall purpose in the St. Louis community. Most importantly I challenge you to become more involved with Annie Malone and helping us meet the needs of abused, homeless and at-risk children who seek help during crisis.

Furthermore, I am interested in setting the stage for more than just a St. Louis tradition, but a model of best practices to educate and care for children. For as long as I am in the role to lead Annie Malone, I will insure that children remain our priority and feel safe during their storm. Our goal is to strengthen and stabilize children and families...the missing link that will bind these two are additional supporters and contributors.

Thanking you for your continued interest and anticipated support, I look forward to seeing some old friends and making plenty of new ones.

Sincerely,

Angela L. Starks, MSW, LCSW
Interim, Chief Executive Officer

Walking For Awareness

On Saturday, October 23, 2010 Annie Malone Children and Family Service Center participated in the Black and Beautiful Breast Cancer Walk for Awareness. The event was sponsored by the League of African American Women and St. Louis City 4th Ward Alderman Samuel Moore.

The purpose of the event is to raise awareness and create support to bridge the gap between young and older black women whose lives have been affected by Breast Cancer.

Staff were prepared to get a good morning walk as they arrived at 8:00 a.m. to receive their T-shirts. The event also provided an opportunity to meet with other participants from the Ville neighborhood and raise awareness of the agency's programs and services during the rally event. Additional information provided helpful facts to all in attendance. Annie Malone looks forward to participating next year!

Keeping Kids Warm

The IBEW Minority Caucus reached a milestone this year: The group collected a combined total of 1,800 warm winter coats for underprivileged children during the past six Christmas seasons. The coats have been collected by volunteers from IBEW Locals 1 and 1439 and by Guarantee Electric Co. and distributed to seven boys and girls clubs in the St. Louis area. This year's coat collec- tion (in foreground) was brought to the Annie Malone Children and Family Service Center to keep kids warm through the cold winter months.

Giving Hearts to Bless Children

Because of so many wonderful supporters, donors, and giving hearts, children and families of Annie Malone Children and Family Service Center had a blessed and jolly holiday season. Thank You!

In recognition of Alpha Phi Alpha Founder's Day, December 4, 1906, members of the Epsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. took time to share important concepts of getting an education and rewarding children of Annie Malone with monetary gifts, filled stockings and gift cards to enjoy during the holiday.

The Kaden Korporation Foundation sponsored an eventful day of Foundation, ice skating and lunch for Annie Malone's Emerson Academy students before their school winter break. Students received additional attention, love, and support as they were given an opportunity to ride in a chauffeured stretch hummer limousine to the Steinberg Skating Rink in St. Louis Forest Park.

The giant decorated Christmas tree trunk was filled by the love and generosity of Dr. Pamela Jackson who provided an assortment of toys, games, and target gift cards for a variety of different age groups.

Our friends from The Kaplan Foundation provided the children of Annie Malone with a shopping spree at Wal-mart. On December 24, they were also treated to a late afternoon show of the whimsical Cirque Dreams Holidaze musical, where ornaments came to life - followed by tasty ice cream sundaes at the Triumph Grill and Moto Museum.

Bank's U.S. Bank Branch Manager, Connie Hester helps Annie Malone's Power of 57 Cents Campaign and Donation Drive by featuring the organization as their customer of the month during December at the downtown branch located on 8th Street.

Annie Malone raises money, awareness for needy children

The raindrops and temperatures were falling but the rib tips and Polish sausage were hot and organizers of the Annie Malone Children & Family Service Center barbecue weren't about to fold their tents.

"From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. we're here, rain or sunshine," said Jahara Davis, coordinator for public relations and volunteers for the nonprofit agency. "If it starts raining, we're not leaving."

The barbecue at Kiener Plaza in downtown St Louis on Friday was that important because it kicked off a series of community and fund raising events for the non profit agency.

The activities culminate with an entire weekend of events on May 14 through 16, highlighted by the agency's annual May Day parade starting at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 16 and a blues music festival at Kiener Plaza starting at 4 p.m.

The barbecue and May weekend celebrations lend financial support for an agency that provides a variety of social and education services in the St. Louis area. Annie Malone has roots in the St. Louis area that extend back to 1888, when it was established to care for neglected and orphaned African American children.
